Gotta love these greeting card holidays. My dad is the definition of a legend: he has literally done everything. This year he decided to embark on his fifth career path and became a chef *half blue face shocked emoji*! Our whole family is immensely proud of him and at the beginning it made for easy gifts. But there are only so many aprons, oven mitts, and cook books one man can have.
With this new career of his, he also is not home all that much. And with me working now too, it’s hard to find time to spend together :( So I knew I had to give him something we could do together for Father’s Day :)
I went to trusty ol’ Google and searched for cooking classes in NYC. A LOT of results popped up so then I decided to refine my searched and looked for Asian food (thinking we could learn how to make some of our favorite dim sum dishes or something idk). I came across this app/organization called Cozymeal. Pretty much I like to think of it as a Craig’s List for cooking classes lol. It’s pretty cool--either restaurants, personal chefs, bakers, members of the culinary world, you name it post listings for classes and you sign up to attend one that suits what you’re looking for. You can also do private classes or even food tours!
*Warning they can be kinda pricey so either keep scrolling for a cheap one or do a group and get a good price*
I ended up choosing this Asian Caribbean Fusion class for us to take based on the time it was being offered and the title--my Dad loves Asian and Latin fusion (‘cause that’s literally my family). So off we went into the city for our class!
The class was meant to have other people, but they ended up not showing so it was like a private cooking class (W)! Our chef, Chef David, was so charismatic and fun I actually had the best time ever living out my food network cooking show dreams. We made black eyed pea salsa, tangerine chicken, roasted garlic string beans, cilantro lime rice, and my new favorite dessert: pina colada ice cream with cinnamon toast crunch. Umm...ikr you’re drooling. So fucking good, so simple: just cut some pineapple, coat them in olive oil, and pop em in the oven. Then roast some coconut flakes till golden brown :) and put the pineapple in a bowl, scoop some vanilla bean ice cream, sprinkle the coconut flakes and cinnamon toast crunch and YOU'RE WELCOME. The warm pineapple and the cold ice cream together omg. It literally tastes like your favorite tropical vacation.
So 10/10 recommend doing fun things like this and meeting great people! Even if you're on your own, it was super fun to get to know the chef and I can only imagine how fun it would be to do a full class too because then you get to know all those people. This would be great if you just moved somewhere or are looking to make new friends or date night/girls night/guys night idk it's just fun go--do it dudes.
Here's all the insta info for Cozymeal and Chef David :)
